September 2004

While the world mourned the tragic events of September 11th 2001, Christians in Toronto celebrated!

No they didn't celebrate the 9/11 tragedy but on the third anniversary of that day, Christians in Toronto held their sixth annual “Festival of Praise” called “Jesus in the City”.

This event usually takes place on the first Saturday following labour day. So this time it landed on September the 11th.

The parade began and ended at Queens Park in Downtown Toronto. (The procession traveled from Queens Park on University Ave. up to Bloor St. across to Yonge St. then south to Dundas St. and westward back to Queens Park via University Ave for those who know the city.)

The parade had a distinct Caribbean flavor to it despite its being represented by diverse multicultural and multiracial groups. This may reflect the fact that the parade has its origins in the Caribbean island of St Kitts.

The procession was filled with joyful chants of “Jesus” and the waving of various national and religious flags by the participants.

After the procession, people gathered at Queens Park to enjoy music, dance and food.

The organizers estimate approximately 20,000 people in attendance at the event this year which is a drop from last year’s numbers. Organizers say the drop reflects the fact that last year’s event was energized by the gay marriage issue which served as a rallying point which brought many Christians to the event (especially Asian Christians).

The organizers however are confident that next years event on September 10th (a great and glorious day) will continue to grow and experience success.
